Single Sign-On(SSO)

Definition

An authentication method that lets users log in once with one set of credentials to access multiple independent applications.

In-Depth Explanation

SSO centralizes authentication through an identity provider (IdP) such as Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, or Google Workspace, so users do not keep a separate password per app. It is commonly implemented with SAML (an XML standard for enterprise web apps) or OIDC (OpenID Connect, an identity layer over OAuth 2.0). A related standard, SCIM, automates provisioning — creating, updating, and deactivating accounts across systems. Enterprise buyers often require SSO and SCIM before adopting a SaaS tool.

Real-World Example

An employee signs into Slack, Notion, and Salesforce with a single Okta login instead of separate passwords for each.
